If Space Mountain is the icon of DiscoveryLand, Columbiad is the icon of Space Mountain! This giant canon is able to blast a rocket-train every 36 seconds.
The columbiad has an angle of 32° . In fact, there is a slight difference between the concept art and the real canon : the opening system above has been replaced by a lateral door.
The base of the canon shows the goddess Luna, which represents the dream of every man to travel in the space. We can also see the signature of the Baltimore Gun Club.
When a train is launched, many animations occurs :
The gears open the lateral door while the sun was standing fixed.
A synchronised "boom" was first broadcasted in every land at the opening of the ride, then only around the mountain. The canon also had a recoil, and a lot of smoke.
